CHESS CLUB WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE LIBRARY - FIRST WEEK WILL BE THURSDAY 16 JANUARY 2025.

Year 5,6  session 12.10pm                Year 3,4 session 12.40pm

Wherever you are in the world, whatever your age or nationality, playing chess will be your international passport to hours of fun. During the Spring 2025 term, Wood Field will take part in the Delancey Schools UK Chess Challenge. This tournament is held once a year only during the spring term and has been running for 29 years now in schools and clubs up and down the country. The first stage of the tournament is played once a week in school at chess club. Each player will have their own score card to record their score after each game and pairings will be made on a simplified Swiss system.  Win = 3 points; Draw or Stalemate = 2 points; Loss = 1 point. (No different to normal) At the start of the tournament, as soon as a player reaches 3 points, they will be given a badge. Players are asked to take great care of their badges as they will be awarded gold spots to stick on them every time they win a match.   Following on from that, players can enter the next stage outside school called the Area Megafinal which is held in May where they can play children from other schools. Qualifiers from that tournament would be invited to the Gigafinal taking place in July.  Players with the highest scores from there would qualify to play in the last stage called Terafinal taking place in August at Blenheim Palace. This is an invitation and is not compulsory.

Chess is a challenging pastime, which develops logical thinking, concentration, forward planning and self-control. Mastering the game of chess often helps the development of personal confidence which has been shown to enhance achievement in basic school subjects..

Registration ends when all places are taken or on 15 January 2025 whichever comes first. If necessary a waiting list will be held so if you would like to go on the waiting list, please email Mrs Vannucci.
